Egba palimpsest is the story of the Egba people, a subunit of the Yoruba people , who came out of the cataclysm that defined life in this part of the world just before the arrival of the British missionaries and the evolution of systematic governance in this part of the world. It was written from the viewpoint of an historical geographer and not that of a conventional historian. It is the story of a people who were never totally displaced from their ancestral to n ton in spite of the turbulence that characterized much of the period. This is the basis of the concept of a palimpsest since the Egba seemed to have managed to retain (and later extend) their grip on the land where their impact had been decisive for most of the 19th century right through to the present day. It is a story told from the point of view of an historical geographer, with many features which are not part of a normal historical rendition. It is hoped that this unusual perspective will bring further clarity and appreciation to the role of the Egba in the evolution of the Nigerian nation.
